Former hunting forest in northern Herefordshire

An extensive swathe of woodlands, the remains of an old hunting forest, running southwest from Ludlow, Shropshire to Shobdon, Herefordshire. Much is owned by the Forestry Commission who have established numerous waymarked trails.
There are also large areas of National Trust woodland, common and parkland centred on their property at Croft Castle, including the Iron Age hill fort at Croft Ambrey. The Wigmore and Yarpole Loops on the Mortimer Trail explore this area.

Public transport
The northern section of the Forest is approximately 3km/2 miles walk along the Mortimer Trail from Leominster, with trains to Shrewsbury, Leominster and Hereford. Buses from Ludlow to Hereford via Leominster pass to the west of the Forest, stopping 3.5km/2.25 miles from Croft Castle: more details from the National Trust.
