Pooley and Alvecote Priory
Canalside green space and mining heritage east of Tamworth
63.5ha
Country Park
West Midlands
Pooley, Warwickshire's newest country park, is on the site of a former mine near Polesworth in the north of the county, the first to produce electricity from excess steam. Wildlife has recolonised the site, with attractive woodlands and pools, and signed trails including the Miner's Walk footpath which has been used since the 1840s. You can explore the site's history at the visitor centre which is powered by solar and wind energy.
Along the canal on the other side of the M42 is Alvecote Priory picnic site, formerly the gardens of a house built on the site of a Benedictine priory, with attractive mature trees.
