  • Bayhurst Wood Country Park. Part of the Ruislip Woods National Nature Reserve. See Colne Valley Park.
  • Bedfont Lakes Country Park. Prizewinning park on the edge of London, opened in 1985 on site of former orchards and gravel pits, now a local nature reserve. Managed by CIP for Hounslow council, tel 01784 423556.

  • Bushy Park. A large area of deer-grazed grassland, plantations and gardens between Hampton and Teddington. See Royal Parks.

  • Denham Country Park and Denham Quarry. See Colne Valley Park.
  • Fryent Country Park and the adjoining Welsh Harp reservoir in Brent are a haven for wildlife, especially waterfowl. Brent council, tel 020 8937 5619

  • Hounslow Heath. An area of attractively open heathland in the shadow of Heathrow Airport, managed by CIP for Hounslow council, tel 020 8577 3664.

  • Queen's Park. Historic Victorian park near Kilburn. See Corporation of London Open Spaces.
  • Ruislip Woods National Nature Reserve, Hillingdon. London's first designated National Nature Reserve is one of its largest areas of semi-natural woodland, a total of 296ha on five principal sites: Poor's Field, Mad Bess, Bayhurst, Park and Copse Woods. Park Wood is the largest continuous area of woodland in London. The sites are mainly managed by Hillingdon council, tel 01895 250651, and overseen by English Nature Essex Hertfordshire and London team. See also Colne Valley Park.

  • Thorney Country Park, Iver. See Colne Valley Park.
  • Wormwood Scrubs, at 80ha/200 acres, is one of the largest areas of common land in London. Managed by Hammersmith & Fulham council.

  • Yeading Valley. There are no less than four London Wildlife Trust nature reserves in the area of Ickenham and Ruislip, in Hillingdon and Ealing boroughs: Ickenham Marsh, Gutteridge Wood, Ten Acre Wood and Yeading Brook Meadows. Together they make up a significant area of valuable woodland and old countryside. Tel 020 8868 0207.
