Heart of England Way

Heart of England Way E2 pathMilford near Stafford to Bourton-on-the-Water
160km/100 miles
Signed

A green route across the West Midlands linking Cannock Chase in Staffordshire with the Cotswolds, running to the east of Birmingham. Generally gentle walking through low-lying country with woodlands, canals and agricultural land, taking in Lichfield, Kingsbury Water Park, the well-wooded landscapes of the Forest of Arden, the Avon Valley, the Vale of Evesham and Chipping Campden.

The route was originally proposed by Alcester Civic Society in 1971 as a link between Lichfield and Chipping Campden, and devised with the help of local walkers' groups including the Ramblers. The first guidebook was published in 1979, and the route was finally recognised by the local authorities, supported by the Countryside Commission, in the late 1980s. The Heart of England Way Association coordinates the route and organises voluntary path wardens (see below).

Most of the route forms a section of European Path E2.

The connecting Arden Way, a 41.5km/26-mile circular walk via Henley-in-Arden, Ulcester and Ullenhall, also devised by the Heart of England Way Association, explores the attractive countryside around the Forest of Arden.
