Recreational Route: Eastern England
Circular via Royston, Tring and Hertford
304km/190 miles
A wandering route taking in the length and breadth of the county, mainly through agricultural land, woodland and chalk downs. It includes the edge of the Chilterns, the National Trust estate at Ashridge Forest, leafy suburbia and principal urban areas such as Hertford, Bishops Stortford and the historic city of St Albans with its Roman remains and famous cathedral.
The route was originally devised to celebrate the Ramblers' diamond jubilee in 1995.

There are railway stations at Royston and Letchworth (Cambridge, Stevenage, Hertford); St Albans (Luton, Bedford, Elstree); Tring, Hemel Hempstead, Kings Langley (Milton Keynes, Northampton, Watford); Potters Bar, Cuffley, Bayford, Hertford (Stevenage, Royston, Cambridge, Alexandra Palace, and also from Hertford East to Broxbourne, Hackney); Bishops Stortford (Cambridge, Broxbourne). Between these points there are local buses, though some may be infrequent. The guide below gives public transport suggestions for each stage.
