East Midlands
- Walk East Midlands edited by Chris Thompson of Nottinghamshire Ramblers. This book brings together the expertise of six Ramblers Areas to create the definitive volume of circular walks in an English region that, as the preface admits, “has a recognition problem”. A substantial book offering 50 walks, most with short and long options, all with public transport links, avoiding the obvious honeypots of the Peak District and exploring instead the surprisingly varied landscapes of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolinshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland, from flat fens to limestone uplands, river valleys and lush woodlands. Even the shorter options can be on the long side (up to 16km/10 miles) but otherwise this is a laudable enterprise, published jointly with Sigma Leisure (ISBN 1 85058 824 4, £8.95, order from bookshops or publisher). The history of walking is full of vivid incidents and striking characters, many of them captured in this new book. Thus George Allen, who walked a thousand miles to advance vegetarianism, shares a cover with Lawrence Chubb, the severely conservative first secretary of the Open Spaces Society, and the young communists who trespassed on Kinder Scout in 1932 jostle with Victorian mountaineers and natural history enthusiasts. The pictures are a delight. (Ann Holt)
