Walk your way to a great Bank Holiday
[24 May 2007]
The Ramblers' Association (RA) is encouraging everyone to
enjoy the great outdoors this weekend, with more than 200
led walks taking
place over the Bank Holiday.
The walks, across England, Scotland and Wales from Friday to
Monday (May 25th-28th), are free and open to all. There’s
something for everyone, from gentle strolls through woodland and
along canals, to coastal, hill and city walks. Many are short
and at an easy-going pace, suitable for all ages and abilities.
Walking is one of the best forms of exercise and just 30 minutes
a day can benefit your health. As well as helping control your
weight, regular walking can help protect you from heart disease
and stroke, high blood pressure and osteoarthritis.
Ruth Wembridge, head of membership, marketing and development at
the RA, said: “With summer on its way, it’s a beautiful time in
the countryside. These walks are a great chance to get out and
about with Ramblers’ Association groups, which are friendly and
full of experienced and knowledgeable walkers. Walking is also
brilliant exercise for all abilities, so if you want to get fit
this summer, our walks will give you a great incentive.”
Newcomers are welcome to try an RA walk free of charge. And you
can join the RA for
just £24 a year, which includes membership of your local walking
group. RA groups offer more than 450 led walks across Britain
every week and with groups all over England, Scotland and Wales
there’s bound to be one near you.
Many groups offer short, easy walks, some are designed for
families and there’s a network of groups for younger walkers in
their 20s and 30s.
In addition members get a free quarterly magazine,
walk, delivered to the
door, discretionary discounts at outdoor stores (including 10%
off at Millets and Blacks) and a free accommodation guide,
walkBritain, packed with discounts on
B&Bs.
