Walkers everywhere can now access a wealth of information at the click of a mouse as the Ramblers’ Association’s (RA) walk magazine goes online.
The new website mirrors walk magazine in offering content that will appeal to anyone interested in the outdoors and walking. It’s packed full of walking features, environmental and campaign articles, gear and book reviews, editorials, Q&As, health advice, photography, competitions, and extra multi-media features.
Along with a planned series of audio ‘Podcasts’ (also playable on your computer as MP3s), walk magazine features a walkTV section in which it challenges all wannabe Spielbergs to produce short videos relating to walking and the outdoors. The section will also soon host a short film on the history of the Ramblers’ Association and already has online a video announcing the winners of the walk reader Awards 2007.
Walk is Britain’s largest-circulation walking magazine, distributed free to all 137,000 RA members. It aims to inspire, inform, engage and educate walkers about walking-related issues and the UK countryside.
Walk editor Chris Ord said: “We’ve developed walk magazine into something so much more than a members’ magazine. We’ve deliberately positioned our editorial content to match newsstand quality in terms of walking articles. In terms of outdoor issues our coverage matches the likes of The Ecologist and quality broadsheets, and is often written by journalists from the very same.
“The new website offers something for everyone, from the casual walker to the serious long-distance hiker and I hope it inspires more people to discover the joys of walking and the beauty of the countryside.”
The website features a section exclusively for RA members offering a full back-catalogue of walk magazine articles along with a ‘wallpaper’ library for computer screens and an audio archive of interviews with the who’s who of the walking world.
Joining the RA costs just £24 a year and offers free access to hundreds of led group walks around Britain every week, as well as discretionary discounts at leading outdoors stores including Millets and Blacks. Members get a free subscription to walk magazine and a walkers’ accommodation guide, walk Britain.
