Ramblers President opens debate on urban walking [5 October 2001]

RAMBLERS PRESIDENT Andrew Bennett MP will be outlining the benefits of walking as a mode of transport in our towns and cities at an open meeting in Manchester on Friday, 12 October.

Mr Bennett is chairman of the House of Commons Urban Affairs Select Committee. He said: "Walking needs to be re-established as an important mode of transport as well as a means of improving our health. To encourage people to get out of their cars in towns and cities facilities for pedestrians need to be greatly improved.

"The emphasis should be on keeping cars out of the way of pedestrians, rather than herding pedestrians out of the way of cars."

The open meeting, Walking in towns and cities - the next steps takes place at 7.30pm at Cross Street Chapel, Cross Street, Manchester.

Mr Bennett chaired an inquiry by a House of Commons committee into walking in towns and cities that produced an influential report earlier this year calling for a better deal for urban walkers.
