Go wild in the country

30 April 2003

The Ramblers' Association (RA) and a host of other well-known outdoor organisations have joined forces to raise awareness of how much the countryside has to offer during National Outdoor Week (NOW!). This week-long celebration of the diversity and beauty of our rural landscapes runs from 3 - 11 May.

Over 200 events will take place all over the UK ranging from hiking and canoeing to cycling and mountaineering in a jam-packed programme guaranteed to delight the whole family. This is the second year of the initiative, which is the brainchild of the RA, the YHA, CTC, the British Canoe Association, The British Mountaineering Council, the Camping and Caravanning Club and Go Outdoors. Last years event was a great success attracting many thousands back to the countryside following the foot-and-mouth epidemic.

Rachael Bryett, Head of Membership, Development and Publicity at the RA said: "With so many events on offer we're hoping that many will decide to stay home this Bank Holiday weekend and get a taste of what the countryside has to offer. There is an event for everyone no matter how fit or adventurous you are and it's a great opportunity to try a new activity".
