Gloucestershire walkers urged to help police

10 November 2004

Gloucestershire Constabulary are calling on walkers to help them tackle the growing problem of illegal hunting in the county.

In recent weeks gangs of illegal huntsmen have been congregating in some remote areas of the countryside to hunt hares and deer with dogs. By definition these areas are sparsely populated and difficult for police to reach quickly, but PC George Lager insists that the public can help by reporting any suspicious behaviour they see immediately

PC Lager said, “I have received several reports of gangs of men using lurchers to illegally course or hunt both hares and deer. I recently broke up an illegal hare course near Fairford that involved 20 men – 17 of which are now being prosecuted.”

PC Lager stressed that those using the countryside for quiet recreation were a vital weapon in the police’s armoury against gangs like this, saying, “We would urge ramblers, cyclists and angles to become our eyes and ears”, while stressing that people should not attempt to confront those whom they suspect may be involved in illegal hunting.

Illegal hunting is particularly cruel and Gloucestershire Police are taking the issue very seriously in an attempt to stamp it out. PC Lager said, “If, when you are out in the countryside, people see a group taking part in illegal hunting or coursing we urge them to call us as soon as possible.”

PC Lager can be contacted on 0845 090 1234.
