ITV launch search for 'Local Heroes'
[17 February 2005]
Following on from its success at getting people off the sofa
and onto their feet, ITV’s
Britain on the Move has been launched
again in 2005 to continue to encourage the nation to take more
exercise…and of course the Ramblers’ Association will be a major
partner once again this year, organising over 400 walks during
the week of National Walking Day (18 September) that are open
and free to the public.
As 2005 is also the Year of the Volunteer, Britain on the Move
will launch a search across the ITV regions for Local Heroes – a
chance for us all to recognise and thank people who have
selflessly done years of volunteer work in their communities.
On 28 February ITV viewers will be asked to nominate Local
Heroes. Nominees will then be feature on ITV‘s regional news
programmes, with viewers asked to vote for their favourite Local
Hero from a shortlist of 10. The eleven regional winners will be
announced on 19 April.
Like many charities, at the Ramblers' Association we know that
many hundreds of our members do invaluable volunteer work within
their communities all year round. From leading walks for the
visually impaired to clearing footpaths and building stiles and
bridges to allow people to walk more freely in the countryside,
the work of our members is invaluable.
If you know someone who deserves to be recognised for their
volunteer work please nominate them as a Local Hero via your
regional ITV station on 28 February. If you would like more
information please contact the press office on
sharonw@ramblers.org.uk or
