'Walk the Way in a Day' and celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Pennine Way
[23 March 2005]
To mark the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Pennine
Way, the Countryside Agency has announced a ‘Walk the Way in a
Day’ celebration to be held on 24 April.
The 268 mile route has been divided into 50 one day circular
walks and everyone, including RA groups, families and walkers,
are invited to register to walk a section on the day.
In 1935 RA member and writer Tom Stephenson first raised the
idea of a long green trail, but it took thirty years for it to
become a reality. At a special ceremony, over 2,000 people
gathered on Malham Moor in the Yorkshire Dales to celebrate its
completion.
40 years later, the Pennine Way is one of 11 official National
Trails designated, managed and part funded by the Countryside
Agency. It runs 268 miles from Edale in the Peak District to
Kirk Yetholm in Scotland and offers the ultimate long distance
walking challenge attracting thousands of walkers over its 40
year history.
Registrations to ‘Walk the Way in a Day’ can be made at the
Pennine Way National Trail website.
