Put a spring in your step with Easter walks

2 April 2007

The Ramblers' Association (RA) is encouraging everyone to put a spring in their step this Easter and enjoy the great outdoors, with more than 200 led walks taking place over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The walks, across England, Scotland and Wales from Good Friday to Easter Monday (April 6th to 9th 2007), are open to all, and offer the perfect chance to see the spring countryside in bloom, kick-start a fitness plan or simply get some fresh air if you’ve been stuck indoors all winter.

They range from a four-mile stroll from Scotney Castle in Kent, to a ten-mile walk in the North York Moors national park. There’s something for everyone, from gentle strolls through woodland and along canals, to walks by the sea, among mountains, and historic sites. Walks are free, open to everyone and many are short and at an easy-going pace, suitable for all ages and abilities.

Walking is one of the best forms of exercise and just 30 minutes a day can benefit your health. As well as helping control your weight, regular walking can help protect you from heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure and osteoarthritis.

Ruth Wembridge, head of membership at the RA, said: “Easter is a beautiful time in the countryside, with spring flowers in bloom and everything coming to life. These walks are a great chance to get out and about with Ramblers’ Association groups, which are friendly and full of experienced and knowledgeable walkers. Walking is also brilliant exercise for all abilities, so if you want to get fit this spring, our walks will give you a great incentive.”

Newcomers are welcome to try an RA walk free of charge. And you can join the RA for just £24 a year, which includes membership of your local walking group. RA groups offer more than 450 led walks across Britain every week and with groups all over England, Scotland and Wales there’s bound to be one near you. Many groups offer short, easy walks, some are designed for families and there’s a network of groups for younger walkers in their 20s and 30s.

In addition members get a free quarterly magazine, walk, delivered to the door, discretionary discounts at outdoor stores (including 10% off at Millets and Blacks) and a free accommodation guide, walkBritain, packed with discounts on B&Bs.
