Today, TV Presenter and Ramblers’ Association President, Floella Benjamin, took a Lambeth Walk to encourage South Londoners to stroll their way to better physical and mental health.

Floella Benjamin, well-loved presenter of Playschool and Ramblers President 2008, was joined by members of the People First walking group for a lively stroll around Brockwell Park. The walkers are participants in the Ramblers’ pioneering Big Lottery funded Get Walking Keep Walking urban healthy walking programme, which is currently helping hundreds of South Londoners make walking a part of their everyday lives.
The Lambeth Walkers are spreading the word that regular, everyday walking, promotes better physical and mental health.
Floella Benjamin OBE comments: “Just 30 minutes of walking a day, 5 times a week is enough to help keep South Londoners healthy. Walking is a great tonic, it keeps me fit in mind and body and really puts me in a positive mood. The more you do, the better you'll feel.”
Veronica Linehan, a member of the People First group who is in the final stages of the 12 week Get Walking Keep Walking programme explains: “I find walking is the perfect way to exercise; it keeps me fit, it’s really interesting, and it’s much easier than going to the gym!”
Tom Franklin, Chief Executive of the Ramblers, comments: “Most people in England don’t get enough exercise. We want to change people’s attitudes; walking is the easiest exercise to fit into everyday life. Almost everyone can do it, anywhere and at any time, for free. You don’t need special clothing, equipment or training and what’s better is that there are no expensive gym memberships to pay.”
He adds: “Lambeth is full of hidden gems such as Lansdowne Circus and Bonnington Square which are made to be discovered on foot.”
