Britain’s Biggest Walking Festival hits 20 yrs!

1 December 2008

“750 walks, 10 days, all FREE”

26th Dec - 4th Jan 2009

This Christmas, the Ramblers’ Association is urging people to wrap up warm, step outside, and help them celebrate the 20th anniversary of Britain’s biggest walking festival, the Festival of Winter Walks, with stroll through some of Britain’s loveliest land. The Festival is sponsored by Nature Valley.

This year, a record 700 walks will be held between Boxing Day and the 4th January, that are free, fun, open to all, and take place in every corner of the country (towns and cities alike). Over 17,500 people, from toddlers to great grandparents, are expected to take to their feet to enjoy walks ranging from the family-friendly 4 mile mince pie stroll to the 14 mile hike in the hills.

This year the Festival is sponsored by Nature Valley and supported by TV presenter and keen walker Ben Fogle. Ben Fogle comments: “Walking is a perfect way to escape and unwind after a hectic Christmas. What better way to introduce yourself to the delights of walking than stepping out in the crisp air of a winter’s day on a free, festive Winter Walks stroll?”

The Ramblers have chosen ten region-by-region highlight walks from this year's programme, including:
• Polzeath cake walk (Cornwall)
• Little Lapland (Midlands)
• Worst-dressed Rambler amble (Aberdeen).
