Bank £60 with a walk this Holiday

22 August 2008

The Ramblers’ Association is advising credit-crunched holidaymakers to save up to £60, by ditching their car and exploring the Great Outdoors on foot this Bank Holiday weekend.

This Bank Holiday, UK car-bound holidaymakers are set to travel an average 304 miles, spending a whopping £60 on unleaded (19p/mile) and £37 (12p/mile) on leaded petrol for their journey (1).

The Ramblers’ Association is holding over 300 led walks this Bank Holiday (23rd – 25th August), taking place all over the country, that are free and open to all (2). They are inviting holidaymakers to join in the walks.

Ruth Wembridge, Head of Membership at the Ramblers’ comments: “In these credit-crunched times, why spend money on a long, hot car journey when there is a world of walking waiting to be explored on your back doorstep?”

“Walking is a free, fun and green way to spend the bank holiday; it’s great for kids and - unlike motorists – adult walkers can take in a pub along the way, too.”
A car-free bank holiday will save you (UK average car journey) (3):

• £58 unleaded and £37 leaded petrol costs
• 85 kg of C02 emissions
• 5 ½ hours on the road travelling
