Ramblers Chief Executive to attend South Downs Campaign rally

08 July 2008

Petersfield Town Square - 20th July at 10.30am

At a rally at Petersfield town square on 20th July at 10.30am, Tom Franklin, Chief Executive of the 140,000 strong Ramblers' Association (RA) will join fellow ramblers and members of the public in supporting the creation of the South Downs National Park and will urge the inclusion of the Western Weald within its boundary.

After the rally, Tom will join fellow RA members and the public on an 8.5 mile walk via the Hangers Way and Hawkley organized by the Hants. Area of the Ramblers’ Association and South Downs Campaign (SDC) coalition members. The route of the walk will pass the memorial stone to the War poet, Edward Thomas.

Walk leader and RA Hants. Area Chairman, Owen Plunkett said, "This is the 36th in a series of South Downs Walks, held to profile those areas that we believe should be included within the future South Downs National Park. We will pass through Petersfield and some of the countryside to the north of the town, which risks being excluded from the proposed national park. However, the South Downs Campaign, Natural England, Hampshire County Council and others all made very strong cases for inclusion of the Western Weald at the recent public inquiry in Worthing".
