Bucks Ramblers go silver

3rd October 2009

Buckinghamshire Ramblers and county councillors gathered on the slopes of Beacon Hill on Saturday 3 October to celebrate the 25th anniversary this year of the Buckinghamshire, Milton Keynes and West Middlesex Area of the Ramblers. The Area was created when the old Southern Area, which covered much of southern England, was divided up in 1984.

The Ramblers were joined by three Bucks County Councillors, Richard Pushman, the chairman; Val Letheren, cabinet member for transportation, and Bill Lidgate, chairman of the rights of way committee.

Addressing the gathering, Richard Pushman, chairman of Bucks County Council, said: ‘I am delighted to congratulate the Buckinghamshire, Milton Keynes and West Middlesex Ramblers as they celebrate their 25th anniversary as a Ramblers’ Area. Walking is becoming more popular and enjoyable and it not only contributes to a healthy lifestyle and well-being, but also supports a more sustainable way of life.’

John Esslemont, chairman of the Ramblers’ Bucks Area, will say: ‘The Ramblers’ greatest achievement over the last 25 years has been access to open country and in Buckinghamshire, the greatest gain has been the ability to climb Beacon Hill, near Ellesborough, as of right. That is why we’ve chosen to hold our celebration here.

‘We are delighted that county councillors have been able to join us today; we greatly value our relations with the council and the attention that councillors and staff give to the wonderful path network in the county. Public paths give top value for money and are an excellent investment in these financially troubled times.’
