What? ‘Bear Hunt’ to launch Furness Families Walk4Life programme
When? Rating Lane Park
Where? 11.00
A bevy of bears, babies, kids and big kids, too, will get their boots on for the ‘Big Barrow Bear Hunt’ in Rating Lane Park, to help launch the Ramblers/ Action for Children’s first-of-its-kind family walking scheme, this Saturday (13 June 2009).

Barrow families will walk through a magical ‘doorway to the world of walking’ into the Park, where they’ll be greeted with a bonanza of child friendly treats including bears, a zebra crossing walkway, face painters and refreshments. There will be speeches by local celebrity Charlie Walduck. Families will then head off up to Barrow Lane Rugby Club for a bear hunt through the woods.
The Bear Hunt will launch the Department of Health-funded Furness Families Walk4Life programme, which aims to get more families out walking. The pioneering free 12 week programmes are based around one maxim: that walking is fun. The scheme uses cartoon characters, specially designed literature, themed walks and activities such as mask making to help more parents and kids discover the adventurous world of walking. It will run from the 13th June to August 30th 2009.
Children of all ages are welcome at the launch, and beyond that, on all walking programmes. The more the merrier!!!
Ramblers organiser, Thomas Moulton, comments: “We’re daring families with kids of all ages to ‘come down to the woods today’ on Saturday, and there they’ll find a big surprise; that walking is one of the funnest, free-est, healthiest and most adventurous activities kids can do.”
“This programme is a real adventure for the Ramblers, as we’re working with young children between 2 and 7 for the first time too.”
Action for Children organiser, Joyce Hawthorn, comments: “Action for Children is thrilled to be working alongside Ramblers with this initiative and the families we support within our children’s centres in Barrow are already looking forward to taking part. We’d like more families to join up to our free 12-week family walking programme and discover a world of adventure on your own back doorstep!”
Local Superslimmer, Charlie Walduck, comments: “For parents and children alike, walking is a brilliant way to get and stay fit. Just 30 minutes walking a day, 5 X a week is enough to keep adults healthy, and can help children achieve their exercise targets of 60 active minutes every day.”
