The Players of People’s Postcode Lottery and Ramblers festivals

Thanks to a generous award from the players of People’s Postcode Lottery, last year, we launched our biggest ever walking festival, Walk About. The festival saw thousands of people joining over 1,827 group walks covering a staggering 14,835 miles across Britain. That's over 1,097,790 calories burned – the equivalent of over 15,000 digestive biscuits!

We are excited to announce that through our long-term partnership with the players of People’s Postcode Lottery (PPL), we have been awarded £450,000 for 2017, to help us in our mission to get everyone, everywhere enjoying walking. Players’ support will allow us to continue to provide toolkits, training, guidance and systems, like Group Walks and Events Manager (GWEM) all year round, with staff on-hand when more assistance is needed.

The PPL award will also help showcase our walking activities through GB-wide festivals: Festival of Winter Walks and Walk About. Players will support the long-running Festival of Winter Walks to make it even bigger and better. Walk About will also become an annual event in the Ramblers calendar from 2018. These festivals will help us attract new people to discover the joys and benefits of walking and to keep walking with the Ramblers.

Festival of Winter Walks 2017 - 18

We are working on plans for the new look Festival of Winter Walks 2017-18. However, we know groups and areas appreciate plenty of notice so we have confirmed this year’s festival dates as:

Saturday 23 December 2017 - Sunday 7 January 2018

All area and group chairs and secretaries will receive updates about the festival throughout the year. This will include the refreshed identity for the festival and ideas to help make the festival great in your area or group.

Walk About 2018

One piece of consistent feedback about Walk About 2016 was the relatively short lead-time.  To allow for plenty of preparation time Walk About will take place next in spring 2018. This gives us all plenty of time to prepare.

Holding Walk About in late spring will mean we benefit from longer days at a time of year when the countryside is bursting into life: great for anyone who has let lapse their New Year’s resolution to walk more often.

We will be providing more information about our festival plans and in the meantime, we’ve given answers to some frequently asked questions in the festival toolkit in the volunteer zone.
