This book is packed full of information about many of the walking routes that make me proud to be British, but it also features a number of far flung walks spanning every corner of the globe, from Peru to New Zealand. The text is heavily focused on the history of each route, explaining how each came into existence – it would perhaps have been more accurately named ‘The History of the Greatest Walks of the World’.
There is a smattering of information about the logistics of walking each route, providing a brief overview for anyone planning to walk one of the routes, but more information would need to be sought elsewhere in order to do so. I would have liked to learn more about the experiences of those who have walked these routes; the lack of such first-hand accounts meant that as a result I came away without feeling particularly inspired to walk any one route over another. I’ll just have to aspire to take on all of the remaining 48 that I’ve yet to do! Liz Cronin
