Leigh Hatts' classic guide is a great book for Thames Path walkers to take along on the trail. I particularly like the fact that unlike some other guides to the route, this book is set out in the direction from east to west, i.e. from the mouth of the River Thames to its source. I was also pleased to see that – as promised in the introduction – it is indeed packed with information about local historical sites on the route. The book is clearly set out so that this interesting information doesn’t get lost within the description of the route itself.

There are also handy OS map snippets at key points, which along with the included additional OS map booklet of the route and surrounding area, should do away with the need to carry separate OS maps when walking the path. My only slight disappointment was the brevity of the information about places to eat and sleep along the way, but that’s nothing that can’t be easily researched in more detail online before setting off.
