+ 700FP down provides good insulation, which is held in place with heat sealed baffles, thus doing away with stitching. This helps to prevent water ingress and cold spots. Columbia has tried to tackle the age-old drawback of down – that it does not insulate when wet – by using OutDry waterproof fabric, so this jacket can be worn in heavy showers. It also has a sizeable hood and good adjustment at the waist that can be used with gloves.
- Although clever, the waterproof outer fabric feels fairly stiff in use – prompting the question whether the down is lofting fully within the baffles. The bonded construction still allowed heat to escape and wind to cut through. The cut isn’t as long as others in this test.
VERDICT If you want to stay warm in the wet, this is a great choice. However, if you want maximum warmth overall or prefer to wear a separate waterproof layer, there may be better choices.
