+ The latest version of Montane’s best-selling entry-level jacket for hillwalkers does all the essentials very well. It’s lightweight, packable and has a good set of features including a fully adjustable hood, two map-sized hand pockets and pit zips.
- Although the Pertex Shield fabric is capable enough for general use, it has its limitations, and waterproof/breathable performance is not as good as other jackets tested here.
VERDICT: A perennial favourite, the Atomic jacket remains one of the best budget waterproofs around. The price is creeping up, but it still offers decent value for money, especially if you shop around to ensure you’re paying less than the £125 RRP.
