McNeish calls for minister to put brakes on Network Rail

28 July 2005

NEWS RELEASE

Ramblers Scotland President Cameron McNeish has called on the Secretary of State for Transport, Alistair Darling, to stop the closure of a rail crossing at Bainfield near Helensburgh.

McNeish said: "The Minister should step in to stop Network Rail taking this high-handed action. We are expecting Network Rail to close the Bainfield crossing at the weekend (30/31 July) so there is still time to intervene."

"There has clearly been public use of the route since before the railway was built. If Network Rail can close this crossing then they are taking away something the public has relied on for more than 150 years."

"The Minister needs to step in and, in consultation with Tavish Scott, Minister for Transport in the Scottish Executive, introduce a new process for dealing with level crossings in Scotland."
