Harris Superquarry Saga Ends
A long running Ramblers campaign came to an end in April 2004 as French aggregate company, Lafarge Aggregates, announced it would withdraw plans for
Britain's biggest quarry on Harris in the Western Isles. Ramblers Scotland
welcomed this as a great decision for the people and environment of Harris.
Proposals for the Harris quarry have been on the table since 1991. If successful the Harris superquarry would have been Britain's biggest ever quarry. Fifty times larger than conventional UK
quarries and turning a mountain into a sea loch.
Ramblers Scotland has suggested that Harris and North Uist should be considered for national park status. Covering the coastal and marine
environment this would reflect the outstanding natural and cultural heritage, promote people’s enjoyment of the area and give a major boost to the local economy.
