In June 2008, Helen Todd of Ramblers Scotland presented a paper to the European Ramblers' Association at their IV International Seminar on Access and Territory in Europe. The conference took place in Malaga, Spain, and there were over 270 delegates from 23 different countries. The aim of the conference was to understand the basis on which access is taken across Europe, especially in relation to nature conservation.
The Ramblers Scotland paper covered access in Scotland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and Denmark. It focussed on the success of the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 since the legislation is relatively new, and it was felt that other countries considering introducing similar legislation could learn from what we have been doing here.
The conference ended with a declaration which, among other things, recommended working towards a European Directive on Access to Nature.
