Join Canavan on the West Highland Way

1 August 2007

News release

President of Ramblers’ Association Scotland, Dennis Canavan, has invited walkers to join him in walking parts of the West Highland Way next week. Dennis will be joining his daughter Ruth who is walking the whole length of the Way from Saturday 4th to Saturday 11th August.

The walk is in memory of Ruth's three brothers, Mark, Dennis John and Paul. Earlier this year Mark died from motor neurone disease only a few weeks after the death of his brother Dennis John, who had a brain tumour. Their young brother, Paul, died in 1989 as a result of a malignant melanoma. Ruth is raising money for Cancer Research UK and the Scottish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

The West Highland Way was Scotland's first long distance route. Completed in October 1980, the route links Milngavie to Fort William – a distance of 152km (95 miles) - from the outskirts of Scotland’s largest city to the foot of its highest mountain, following the shores of its largest freshwater loch. It passes from the lowlands, across the Highland Boundary Fault and on into the Scottish Highlands.
