Walk your way to health and vitality in 2007

10 January 2007

News Release

Bearsden & Milngavie Ramblers are launching a programme of short, easy walks in the local area as part of its charitable aim of promoting walking for health and pleasure. The group initiative is part of Ramblers Scotland’s “Get Fit For Tomorrow” Project, funded through the Paths for All Partnership.

Walking is low risk, and is easier to start and sustain than most other forms of physical activity. Research shows that just 30 minutes of brisk walking on most days of the week can help reduce the risk of heart disease, type II diabetes and a number of cancers. Moreover, it helps you maintain a healthy weight, improves sleep quality and lessens stress, anxiety and depression.

The walks are gentle-paced, 3-4 miles long and should take about 2 hours to complete. All are on good paths, with little or no ascent and are taken at the pace of the slowest walker. Walking areas are local and include Drumclog Moor and Mugdock Wood and Reservoir.

Ramblers Scotland’s Promoting Walking Officer, Kathryn Wortley says, “These short, easy walks are great if you are new to walking and don’t fancy anything too adventurous. They are also perfect as a next step from health walks, and can be easily slotted into your busy day.”

Walks will take place fortnightly from Wednesday 17th January. Everyone is welcome; you do not need to be a member of The Ramblers’ Association to come along. Meet outside Milngavie CE Leisure Centre at 10am. Walkers should wear stout comfortable shoes or boots and bring a drink, snack and waterproofs or an umbrella. For more information about the walks contact Andrew Summers on 0141 942 6505. Sorry, these walks are unsuitable for preschool children. No dogs please.
