Windfarm Challenge to the Politicians

27 March 2007

Media Release

RA Scotland Director, Dave Morris, has warned Scotland’s politicians of the significance of tomorrow’s decision on a windfarm application in the Ochils hill range between Perth and Stirling.

Dave Morris said:

“Everyone who intends to vote in the May elections for the Scottish Parliament and local councils should watch how the local councillors of Clackmannanshire Council deal with the planning application for thirteen 100metre turbines at Burnfoot, just to the west of Glen Devon in the Ochils.

The Burnfoot decision will tell us how much importance the different political parties attach to landscape, outdoor recreation and tourism, as opposed to the furthering the aims of the energy generating companies.”

Dave Morris emphasised there was widespread opposition to this project:

“It would be an outrage if Councillors approved this project while a public inquiry is continuing into 4 other windfarm applications in other areas of the Ochils. With Scottish Natural Heritage, Clackmannanshire’s own landscape advisers, other developers and a wide range of environmental and outdoor recreation groups all stating their opposition to the Burnfoot scheme it is obvious that rejection of Burnfoot is the only reasonable decision that any politician can take. If the Councillors of Clackmannanshire value the Ochils and the people who live in the surrounding communities, as well as all who visit these magnificent hills, they must see that Burnfoot is the wrong answer to the meeting our future energy and environmental needs.”
