Ramblers Scotland’s Promoting Walking Project can help you get on the move
Ramblers Scotland believes that if getting fit is one of your New Year’s resolutions this year, walking is ideal. It is easier to start and sustain than most other forms of physical activity, it is low risk and can be easily incorporated into people’s lives.
Research shows that just 30 minutes of brisk walking on most days of the week can help reduce the risk of heart disease, type II diabetes and a number of cancers. Moreover, it helps you maintain a healthy weight, improves sleep and lessens stress, anxiety and depression.
Ramblers Scotland’s Promoting Walking Officer, Kathryn Wortley would encourage everyone to put their best foot forward. “Walking is the best form of exercise to enjoy anytime, anyplace and with anyone, and through Ramblers Scotland’s Promoting Walking Project, catching the walking bug couldn’t be easier”.
The project, launched last year, builds on the Ramblers long-term commitment to promote walking for health and pleasure as one of its four charitable aims. It is funded by the Scottish Executive through the Paths for All Partnership and will help to support the Scottish Executive’s National Strategy for Physical Activity.
The project will set up new walking groups across Scotland focused on doing 3-5 mile walks, and help the 51 existing Ramblers groups to offer more diversified walks. These include short, local, family or themed walks.
Kathryn Wortley adds,
“Short walks are perfect if you want to try walking but don’t fancy anything too adventurous. The walking opportunities we are providing through the project are also a great stepping stone between the health walks currently offered by Paths to Health and other organisations, and the more ambitious outings generally offered by walking clubs.”
