Communities on Foot Project

Communities on Foot Project

The Communities on Foot Project runs from April 2008 to September 2010 and will see links developed within selected community and town councils in Neath Port Talbot, local volunteers, local people and other stakeholders; in an effort to significantly improve path conditions in the those areas. The main focus and objective of the pilot scheme will explore ways to encourage community and town councils (or local residents groups) to take a proactive approach to improving path conditions in those areas.

The project has already developed close links with One Voice Wales, the umbrella organisation for community and town councils in Wales; as well as local Ramblers Cymru groups and other community based organisations at a local level. A successful funding application to The Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) has led to the appointment of a field officer, Julie Hannam who is leading on the project. Contact Julie for more information at: julie.hannam@ramblers.org.uk CCW Logo

WAG LogoIt is envisaged that the work will culminate in the production of a toolkit that will be rolled out as a good practice guide for use by all 700 community and town councils across Wales.

Walking Heritage Guardians

A recent successful funding bid to the Wales Rural Fund will shortly see the launch of Walking Heritage Guardians seeking to identify those special areas of interest within each of three selected communities and promote them as a series of local walks that plot the rural and cultural heritage of those areas. The aim will be to research, document and publish this information to make this available as a valuable information service for local community groups, businesses and visitors.

The aims of the project will be to identify, recruit and train 'Walking Heritage Guardians’ within the target communities who would be briefed to provide local cultural and heritage walks. Being run as an integral part of the Communities on Foot project; Walking Heritage Guardians will also help Ramblers Cymru deliver on this all important flagship project.
