NEW! Rail Rambles programme available now!

Ramblers Cymru and Arriva Trains Wales's Rail Rambles programme is this year celebrating 20 years of guided walks from railway stations originally in Mid Wales and now extending across North, Mid and South Wales.

It has, over the years enabled thousands of people to enjoy walking in the countryside without using cars.

Wales has an excellent rural rail network accessible from the major towns. From the Conwy Valley line in the north; to the Cambrian and Heart of Wales lines (together serving Powys, Gwynedd and Carmarthenshire), to the South West Rail line out to Pembrokeshire; and not forgetting the Valleys lines - all give fantastic access to excellent walking country.

As with other walks in our programmes, a variety of distances and grades are offered. Many will be circular walks, but Rail Rambles give new opportunities to walk from one station to another. All Rail Rambles are led by members of the Rambler's Association.

Parties are usually a moderate size of 15-25. All walks leaders are insured, booking is not necessary and no charge is made for conducting the walks (but of course you have to pay for your rail fare!)

Please make sure that you are fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to join. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first: it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted.

Ramblers groups throughout Wales now offer a variety of walks accessible by trains. These are building up into a national network of car-free walking opportunities. Details can be searched for using our Walks Finder. (In the 'Detailed Search' menu, search for "Car-free walks" for the period you are interested in).

Printed Rail Rambles programmes are available from all relevant stations in Wales and are also available from local Tourist Information Centres. An online programme is available to download above.
