Countryside Protection Work in Wales

One of the main aims of the Ramblers is to protect the natural beauty of the countryside for the benefit of walkers and the wider public. We value the countryside not only for its landscape, wildlife and cultural heritage, but also for the opportunities it provides to get out in the fresh air to enjoy the health benefits that walking can provide.

The countryside –including those areas of natural green space that can be such jewels in urban areas – deserves protection. The places that we love need guarding against inappropriate developments. There is also any number of wider environmental issues that impact on our enjoyment of the countryside.

Local countryside secretaries can act as sentinels for the Ramblers' Association, monitoring any developments that may threaten the countryside and the environment. Looking at relevant plans within local authority areas, our volunteers are invaluable to the work of the Ramblers' Association. We are always keen to hear of people who are interested in volunteering for us. Find out more about volunteering.

The Countryside Campaigner in RA Wales is involved with a variety of campaigns that are of significance to Wales - engaging with these issues at national or regional level. The Welsh Assembly Government and Countryside Council for Wales, create policy positions that influence our countryside and our opportunities to enjoy them for many years to come. For this reason it is important that in RA Wales we make our voice heard at this level.

Below are some links to a number of national consultations that we have responded to. Please contact us in the RA Wales office if you would like further information on (029) 2064 4308 or e-mail martind@ramblers.org.uk .
