Welsh language scheme launched by Ordnance Survey (OS) (07/2006)

In July Ordnance Survey launched its Welsh Language Scheme that outlines its policies towards bilingualism in Wales. One of the Scheme's key targets was a dedicated Welsh Language Helpline, introduced in February for Ordnance Survey's Welsh speaking customers.

The Scheme also features Ordnance Survey's policies towards the place names of Wales. Bilingual place names were first shown on Landranger maps in 1991 and are now applied to 1:25,000 scale mapping, as space allows. Place names also feature in geographical referencing databases and are crucial for many users of Ordnance Survey maps and data, particularly to the emergency services in their race against time.
