Access Denied: fighting for fair access to nature

Access to nature isn't a luxury. It's a right.

Access to nature isn't a luxury. It's a right. But across Britain, millions are cut off from nature because local paths are missing, blocked or unusable.

Why access to nature matters

Time in green space and the outdoors is vital for us all. It has a significant impact on health and wellbeing, but with no safe local paths and walking routes close to home, many people are struggling to make it part of their lives.

The importance of local paths

Local paths are lifelines. They connect people with green space, fresh air, and better mental and physical health. Right now we need these things more than ever. But without safe walking routes close to home, it's almost impossible to make walking in nature part of everyday life.

But years of political and financial neglect are taking their toll. Across Britain, thousands of miles of local paths are missing, blocked or unusable, stopping people being able to access nature close to home.

Access to nature is a right. Let’s fight for it.

Governments must act now to open up paths and expand the path network to serve every community.

Access to nature is deeply unequal in Britain

Across Britain, people in less well-off communities are more likely to lack safe, accessible paths that connect them to green space near where they live. This isn't just unfair, it's unhealthy. And it's deepening existing health and wellbeing equalities.

Without action, more paths will be neglected and lost. And more people will be denied their right to access nature.

What needs to happen?

The Ramblers' Access Denied campaign is calling on governments to end years of neglect of Britain's path network and make the right to access nature a reality in every community.

Governments must act now to protect and expand the path network so every community can enjoy nature close to where they live. Our politicians know how powerful walking is for health, wellbeing and connection so they must ensure everyone has safe, accessible paths to reach nature near their home.

BBC finds nearly 32,000 places where paths are blocked in England and Wales

A BBC investigation has found nearly 32,000 places in England and Wales where walkers are blocked from using our path network.

On the right side of the image, a rectangular sign stands on metal legs with the words “FOOTPATH CLOSED” in large, reflective white letters. The sign is partially obscured by overgrown leaves and branches. Behind the sign, the path continues into a darker area, with an orange traffic cone placed near a wooden gate or barrier.
