Rob Owen – New Ramblers Cymru Chair
“I am delighted to be appointed as the Chair of the Welsh Council’s Executive Committee and looking forward to helping Ramblers Cymru. I must admit, I’m not a ‘seasoned’ member of the Ramblers, I’m comparatively new to the organisation – but I hope that will be an advantage in that I can look at things afresh. I’m a Welsh speaker and originally from Anglesey, though I now live in the Vale of Glamorgan.
“Throughout my working life, which dates to 1982, (where did the time go?), I’ve been involved in improving access to, and enjoyment of, our wonderful countryside and coast. My first job was Coastal Project Officer on Anglesey and what a great experience that was! After 10 years with the Island’s Borough Council, I joined the Countryside Council of Wales (CCW) and started a 20-year spell, that included, amongst other highlights, developing the Wales Coast Path. So, over the years I’ve been heavily involved in policy and delivery of access in Wales - and I hope now to share that experience with Ramblers Cymru.
“This is an incredibly important time for the Ramblers. We all know that Covid restricted our ability to access the countryside, and the impact this had on people’s health and wellbeing. There’s now a growing desire to walk regularly and discover new paths close to our homes, and, as restrictions ease, to explore further afield as well. But I’m not convinced that our rights of way network is in good order; paths have become blocked and unusable. And if they are not used, they will become lost.
“There’s a lot to do therefore to improve the condition of paths and to encourage more people from all backgrounds and ages to get out there and enjoy our wonderful landscapes, wildlife and history. Walking, and the agenda of Ramblers Cymru, is now more important than ever – and I hope to play my part in this exciting period in our history.
“I’m also looking forward to meeting many of you and to join you in local walks!
“Diolch yn fawr.”
