Could an exoskeleton help you get more out of your walks?

The Ramblers and Hypershell are organising a showcase event to allow you the opportunity to find out.

What is an exoskeleton?

An exoskeleton is a wearable device that uses sensors, smart algorithms, and precise motor assistance to help the wearer move.

Exoskeletons, such as Hypershell’s products, respond to your movements in real time, and are designed to help you conserve energy and maintain endurance. They can make long hikes or challenging terrain feel less exhausting.

Hypershell are one of the first companies to bring this technology to walkers in Britain but in years to come, they may become a common sight on paths across the country. You can try it yourself at our showcase event near Manchester on 28 March 2026 by registering here.

A young man and young woman are hiking up a steep, scrambly footpath. They are wearing hiking gear and using hiking sticks because of the rocky terrain. Either side of the path is green and orange moorland. It's a sunny day and the sun is low in the sky and facing towards the man and woman, the woman is squinting as she looks across the landscape .

How does an exoskeleton work?

Hypershell suggest thinking of an exoskeleton as an extension of your body so that its working principles become easier to understand.

Humans rely on eyes, ears, and sensory systems to perceive the world, then use the brain to process information, make decisions, and activate muscles to move.

An exoskeleton follows the same logic. The technology continuously senses, decides, and acts, creating a seamless loop of movement assistance.

“[The exoskeleton] keeps me active, gives me hope, and enables me to keep doing amazing things.” Jason Rawles, a mountain walker from North Wales

Who could benefit from using an exoskeleton?

Anyone who wants to enhance their walking could benefit.

Exoskeletons can help you go further, or faster, or for longer than you can on your own. And they can help you feel less tired afterwards, and recover more quickly for your next walk.

Just like an e-bike helps cyclists ride longer and faster, an exoskeleton could do the same for walkers.

As Jason, a mountain walker from North Wales said, “At 51, I’m entering the best years of my life and refuse to let them pass me by. It’s about making amazing memories with the people I love and staying in nature where I belong. This isn't just tech – it’s a reason to get out of bed. It keeps me active, gives me hope, and enables me to keep doing amazing things.”
