Choosing the right walking boots to suit your needs is an important first step to enjoying your walks. But did you know that the way you lace your boots can make all the difference to your comfort?

Here are three simple lacing techniques from the experts at Cotswold Outdoor that can make all the difference to your comfort:

Window Lacing

A rectangular “window” is created in the middle to relieve pressure on the top of the foot. After skipping the crossover zone, the laces resume normal criss-crossing higher up.

Got a painful pressure point across the top of your foot? This method creates a small ‘window’ by running the laces straight up before crossing them over again. It relieves pressure and makes your boots more comfortable for the miles ahead.

Surgeon’s Knot

The laces cross over each other in a standard criss-cross pattern, but at two points the crossovers are doubled, forming a surgeon’s knot that locks the tension in place. The surgeon’s knots sit at the pressure points of the foot, keeping the lacing snug and preventing loosening during movement.

If your heel is slipping, try this. By wrapping and locking the laces twice at key points on your boot, you create a firm hold that keeps your heel in place and stops movement inside the boot.

Toe-Relief Lacing

The laces begin at the second eyelet pair and continue upward with a simple criss-cross pattern using the green sections. This creates more room in the toe box and reduces pressure on the toes.

When your toes need extra room, simply skip the first set of lace hooks. This opens up the toe box, reduces pressure, and can give you just enough relief to enjoy the rest of your walk.

Most boots come with long laces so you can adapt to these techniques whenever you need. And if your laces are worn out, be sure to replace them with the right length and shape for your boots.
