Out There: Breaking down barriers to the outdoors

We know that more people are enjoying walking, and we think there's potential to make it even easier for everyone to enjoy the benefits of our amazing landscapes and access rights, by breaking down barriers to the outdoors.

Our survey has found that only half of Scots say they know where they are legally allowed to walk - highlighting the need to raise awareness of our world-class access rights. It also showed that young people in particular lack walking partners, and knowledge of where to walk.

Through this campaign, we're promoting a range of exciting activities and events, all aimed at helping more people – especially beginners – to get out there.

That includes breaking down barriers to the outdoors through:

  • Social media campaigns such as our three-part video series with the Scottish Government,  aimed at helping young people plan safe days out.

  • Reaching new audiences: 81% of people who saw our campaign Facebook posts are under 34-years-old.

  • Partnering with Young Scot to motivate and inspire young people with blogs, videos and online competition.

  • Engaging decision-makers on the need for investment in the outdoors including speaking with MSPS and Scottish Government ministers at our excellent Parliamentary reception.

Breaking down barriers to the outdoors will become an even bigger focus for the campaign in the coming years, and we'll update this page with more details soon.
