A moderate 11 mile circular starting at our base of Chirk Castle, this route is offered as a led walk with our knowledgeable local Ramblers group for those who would like a challenge but are less confident at map reading or as a self-led walk for those who are a little more confident. There are a number of steep climbs, but the rewards are stunning views across the Ceiriog Valley.
The route starts with a walk across the estates pastures towards Chirk. On leaving the grounds you cross a lane into a small field and into a small woodland on the banks of the Llangollen Canal. Here you go over the canal and down onto the canal tow path. You may then need a torch as you go through the canal tunnel at Chirk, before walking over Chirk Aqueduct, a 21 metre high structure by Thomas Telford. Continuing along the canal you’ll then leave the towpath to join the road and after a short walk join a small footpath on your right through a small area of houses before passing a playground and joining quiet lanes descending to the Ceiriog river. The path continues through pasture along the banks of the river into Pentre Woods where you’ll have a short climb up to the road.Once on the road you’ll have stunning views back across the Ceiriog Valley to Chirk Castle.
Leaving the road once again you’ll cross a couple of fields and join the Offa’s Dyke path where you’ll have a steep climb up through fields. The Offa’s Dyke path crosses an old track and here you’ll leave the Offa’s Dyke path and take the old track up with a steady climb on stony ground out onto a quiet lane. As the lane levels out you’ll take a byway on your right which will lead you to spectacular views of the valley beyond. The next track then heads steadily down through Pen-Craig woods turning into a tarmacked lane. Bearing left you’ll follow the lanes and cross the Ceiriog River at Pontfadog. The paths will then take you gradually up the valley side, along quiet lanes through woodlands and fields before finally entering the estate grounds where Chirk Castle and the end are in sight, and tea and cake awaits.
Sturdy footwear is recommended, and a torch may be useful for the Chirk tunnel.
