Ramblers Roadshow: Walk Leader and Navigation Training

Ramblers Roadshow

Birmingham University

Saturday, July 27th

09:30 to 16:30

Sandwell Ramblers depends on volunteers to keep our group running. Without volunteers stepping up we would not have a group.

The Ramblers Roadshow is aimed at those who want to give something back to the group (and I would hope that every one of you would want to find some way to do that at some point). It is a great chance to find out more about the Ramblers, about leading walks or helping to run our group. Everyone can get involved and the day will give you a chance to find out more.

On the day there will be workshops in Walk Leadership, Navigation and Treasurer training, as well as a chance to discuss and put questions to an walking expert panel. The day is absolutely free to all Ramblers members, with lunch and refreshments provided.

Walk Leadership Induction - The course will cover the ethos behind being a Ramblers walk leader and the practicalities, legal requirements, ideas and some skills needed for planning and leading a walk. Some of the day will be based in the training room and some of it out walking. By the end of this training walk leaders will have a greater understanding of what makes a good walk and how to go about delivering this, linking this knowledge to Ramblers guidelines, best practice and will be able to lead a Ramblers walk with increased confidence.

Treasurer Training - This workshop is for anyone who is undertaking the role of area or group treasurer or about to take the role on. It will provide an opportunity to discuss any questions you have about your role, meet others who hold the role of treasurer and build the knowledge you'll need to undertake this critical role. The day will look at the systems and process used and will be led by the Ramblers finance team.

Navigation - This workshop is designed to give members an introduction to how to navigate using a map and compass. It covers the basics of using a map and compass. Among the techniques covered are; basic map reading, reading contours, grid references, setting a map with a compass and taking a bearing. No prior knowledge of map reading is required for this session – it is designed for beginners and those who want to brush up on their knowledge. Maps and compasses are provided.

The day will finish with an informal panel discussion over tea and coffee focusing on questions you have as a volunteer.
