Journey to the source of the world’s greatest cheese: Cheddar!
As well as a cheese, Cheddar is also a gorge, and a village – we shall be staying in or near the latter and walking around the former.
17:30 Gorge road walk - 3 miles - easy
You don’t need to be fully geared up for this short road walk. This is the opportunity to see the gorge from the bottom up, as far as the Cheddar Cliffs, before returning for dinner close to the mouth of the gorge. If time, we’ll go for a swift half at The White Hart before dinner.
19:30 La Rocca Italian restaurant
21:45 - The White Hart
10:00 - Rowberrow & Doleburry Warrens, Black Down & Cheddar Gorge - 13 miles Strenuous
Ascent through the woods of Warrens Hill and over to Rowberrow Warren. Scale the ramparts of Dolebury Warren fort, cross Black Down to the trig point at Beacon Batch, then South to Black Rock and the spectacular finale of the walk along the Eastern side of the gorge with Golden Hour sun sparkling on the reservoir in the distance as we descend back into Cheddar. (See picture above).
19:30 Dinner at The Bath Arms
10:00 Cheddar, Compton Bishop, Wavering Down & Fry's Hill - 13 miles - moderate
Follow the River Yeo to Compton Bishop, then ascend Crook Peak for panoramic views. Head East along the ridge, past trig point on Wavering Down. At Callow Hill Quarry, we descend Fry's Hill and skirt the reservoir to return.
Late afternoon - an opportunity to buy Cheddar Cheddar in Cheddar?
