Thornton-le-Dale is a picturesque village in the Yorkshire Dale, on the edge of the North Yorks Moors National Park, with a tiny triangular green, duck pond and pretty cottages beside a babbling beck. The walking is all round fabulous. Starting at Hole-of-Horcum means you are in a fabled landscape: the hole was formed when the giant Wade grabbed a handful of earth to throw at his wife Bell during a domestic.
