Lauder is a market town situated on the Leader Water on the western edge of the Lammermuir Hills, 22 miles south east of Edinburgh. It maintains the layout of and ancient Scottish burgh.
Nearby is the turreted and towered Scots Baronial Thirlestane Castle, one of the seven ‘Great Houses in Scotland’.
Starting in Earlson gives the chance to see the Rhymer’s Tower, a ruinous 16th century tower, and is the traditional home of Thomas of Erceldoune commonly known as Thomas the Rhymer from an ancient ballad. Steeleye span have a song that recounts this story: there are fairies involved!

The coach leaves our finishing point at 6:00 pm to return to Newcastle
