Haltwhistle is close to Hadrian’s Wall west of Newcastle. It dates back to Roman times and the old Roman road of Stanegate is close by. It was also a frequent target for reivers: there are five castle houses It also claims to be the geographical centre of England, equidistant from the sea as measured along the principal points of the compass. But this, as you can imagine, is hotly disputed. There is much excellent walking to be had in the surrounding hills, valleys and riversides: not least of which is Hadrian’s Wall.
