This is a circular walk
This undulating walk explores the countryside to the north of Cardiff. We start by climbing to the top of Caerphilly Common before following the Ridgeway Walk west to the ridge of Craig yr Allt. The route descends to the Taff Trail which is followed to Castell Coch, a Gothic Revival construction with the appearance of a fairy tale castle.
We then head to Thornhill for the lunch and pub stop. Eventually we climb back to the top of the escarpment which we now follow in a north-easterly direction, enjoying fine views across the Bristol Channel. A descent and re-ascent through woodland brings us back to the Ridgeway which we follow west for most of the return journey.
Give us a try!
This is one of hundreds of Ramblers group walks for all ages and abilities every week - all led by our experienced walk leaders.
You’re welcome to join us on any of our walks to see if the Ramblers is for you. Then, once you’ve enjoyed the views, fun, exhilaration and good company, it’s just a case of becoming a member.
Do make sure you're fit enough and have the right footwear and clothing for the walk you want to do, though. You can contact the group or leader if in doubt.
