CANCELLED Middleton Moor and Nesfield
Sunday, 6 May 2018
Start time: 10:30
(Estimated finish time: 14:45)
Moderate 7.5 miles / 12.1 km
Start from Ilkley old bridge. We walk towards the outdoor swimming pool and up
through the delightful Middleton woods. A working pole would assist this part of the
walk. From the woods, we pass Myddelton Lodge. This imposing building was once
the hunting lodge and home of the Myddelton family who were “Lords of the Manor
of Ilkley and owned most of the town of Ilkley. It was subsequently a spiritual retreat
and owned by the Diocese of Leeds until sold on. It is now a hotel. We make our way
onto Middleton moor where we will have a stop for tea/coffee. Continuing over the
moor, we will be walking some of the old Roman roads towards the little hamlet of
Nesfied. This will be a convenient place to take lunch at the Postman’s Rest, built in
1926, to replace an earlier one, for postmen to use when delivering mail on foot. We
make our way back to Ilkley walking over delightful meadows, woods, and the river
Wharf and the old bridge.
