(Estimated finish time: 18:00)
Strenuous 10.5 miles / 16.9 km
For those who completed this walk on the 18th Dec 2016 this is the extended version with an extra 2 miles and slight changes to the walking route. However all the steep hill climbs you loved remain.
For those new to this walk it covers the three main hills in the surrounding area. Starting at the Breidden Forestry Car Park with an uphill walk to warm up the legs as we make our way through the local forest area and walk away from the hills to first climb a few minor hills. A small road walk leads us to the first steep ascent up Middletown Hill. This is a treeless open hill with great views of the surrounding area (weather permitting).
We will then make our way down to Middletown with a small flat walk to the next hill of Moel y Golfa with another steep ascent through a forest. At the top we will stop for a break at the Monument to local man called Uriah Burton (King of the Gypsies).
After heading down we will make a way to the next steep ascent up Breidden Hill. At the top awaits Rodney's Pillar. This Pillar was built Rodney’s Pillar at the top was built in 1781 by the gentlemen of Montgomeryshire who supplied oak from the area & shipped them down the river Severn to Bristol where Admiral Rodney’s fleet was built. From here there is a final downhill descent back to the car park.
Please note this walk contains 3500 ft ascent and you will need a good level of fitness. If you are unsure please contact Brent to discuss.
Free parking at Breidden Forestry Car Park. From the A458 heading towards Wales. Turn right onto the B4393 just after the BBQ Smokehouse pub. Stay on this road for 9 miles and turn left onto Criggion Lane. After 1.6 miles the car park can be found on the left.
